Old Florida Burgers in a Backyard

The Chattaway runs on a formula that has not needed updating: a burger, a basket of fries, sweet tea, and enough outdoor seating to make the whole thing feel like a cookout with a cash register. The burger is the reason people cross town for it, a diner-style patty served without pretense, and the fries hold up as a real side rather than filler. Sweet tea gets called out often enough to count as a third signature, which says something about a kitchen that treats the basics as worth getting right rather than as an afterthought to a fancier menu. This is American food in the plainest sense, the kind of order-at-the-counter cooking that predates the current wave of smash burgers and brioche buns, and it reads as more honest for it. St.

Petersburg has plenty of rooms chasing a polished plate; this one is not one of them, and it does not need to be. The outdoor seating is the actual draw as much as the food, string lights and picnic tables standing in for a dining room, which puts The Chattaway closer to a backyard party than a restaurant in feel. Pricing stays moderate, which matters, because this is built for repeat visits rather than a special occasion. It works for a family that does not want to negotiate over where to eat, for a first date low on pressure, for anyone who wants a burger without a wait that eats up the afternoon. It is not competing with the smoked mullet houses across the bridge or the Cuban sandwich counters in Ybor.

It is competing with every other casual burger spot in St. Pete, and the tea and the fries are what keep people choosing it over the closer options. The room's whole appeal is that it has not tried to become something else.

!

Get the burger with the fries and a sweet tea rather than substituting anything; that trio is the order that made the place a regular stop, and the outdoor tables are worth waiting for over a spot inside.

How we score

The Insider Score is our own 10-point editorial rating, set by the writer who covers the room. It is never an average of other sites’ stars, and it is never for sale. It weighs three things:

01Track record

How highly a kitchen rates, across how many diners, over how long.

02Consistency

Whether recent diners still agree with the long-term verdict.

03Distinction

What the kitchen does that its category does not.

The Chattaway earns a 5.3, solid on our scale for American in Tampa.

Staff Writer. Grew up bussing tables near the sponge docks and keeps score across the bridges: a room has to beat what is already on her side of the water to earn the drive. Leads with the practical fact.
